2018 Knysna Simola Hillclimb Day 1 – Classic Car Friday
After having attended the Simola Hillclimb several times over the past few years, we decided it was time to participate with something rather special; Cue the 1962 Lotus Elite (one of just 14 factory-built race cars), originally raced by Ian Fraser Jones (Team Competition Cars) back in ’62 and ’63.
This was such a proud moment for our team at Exclusive Assets, as well as for the passionate owner, Richard Clarke (who also piloted this machine up the hill on the day), seeing this beautiful piece of South African motorsport history back in action after being in storage for 13 years and recently having undergone a 2+ year restoration. We ended up running a 01:11, just a few seconds off the class leader – not bad for a classic car from 1962 with a 1,216cc motor.
For us, it was not all about the lap time though, it was about keeping a piece of motoring history alive and on the road for other enthusiasts to enjoy. A big thank you goes out to our team at Exclusive Assets, Team MR2 Competition Cars, the Knysna Simola Hill Climb organizers and all who helped make this possible. We’ll definitely be back again next year with the Elite and perhaps a few other surprises
